Lancaster & Morecambe's early photographers 1840-1940

Since moving to the area in 1999 and re-engaging with my love for the History of Photography, I began collecting CDVs and Cabinet Cards by local photographers (both physical versions and online examples).

I'm hoping here to share these photographers, some brief biographical information and to show some examples of their work, mostly portraits, but occasionally landscapes or other styles. Where I can I'll also share some examples of the backs of the cards, which, sometimes basic or blank, were also often very elaborate and decorative, and can help to identify the photographer and to date the images.

N.B. This is very much the start of a work in progress. There were literally hundreds of photographers setting up business locally in this period, eager to cash in on the new 'portraiture' craze. Some lasted, some didn't. If you have any information that can be added to this page, corrections you'd like to make, or if you can put names to any of the many faces here please do get in touch.

And, if you have any early Lancaster & Morecambe photos that you would be happy to see go to a good home, again, please get in touch.

Lancaster and Morecambe's Victorian Photo History

Since beginning this website, I was contacted by Rob Whalley, a Lancashire photo historian, who has offered a number of comments, suggestions and amendments, and has been extremely helpful and giving of his experience.

Rob kindly offered to further research the early history of photography in Lancaster and Morecambe and to write an article delving deeper into this fascinating story.

You can download and read a copy of Rob's article via the button below.

July 2, 1897: The Death of Signor Pandolfini

The Inquest: Mr. Coroner Holden held an inquest at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary on Friday afternoon, touching the very sudden death of a gentleman locally known as Signor Rodolphe Pandolfini, aged 65, who was found dead in the “dark” room of his photographic studio, Elm House, Meeting House Lane, on Thursday morning. The deceased is stated to have been an Italian Count, who at one time had influence in diplomatic circles. Born in Rome in 1832, Sig, Pandolfini was a member of one of the oldest families in Italy. He served his country as Consul in France and afterwards in Dublin. He came to Lancaster 23 years ago, at the invitation of Mr. Edmund Sharpe, to assist him in some architectural work. He was an expert linguist, and after Mr. Sharpe’s death began teaching languages. He acted as foreign correspondent to Messrs. Storey Bros., and gave instruction in Italian and French at the Storey Institute. He first took to photography as a “hobby,” and was a clever artist, devoting much of his spare time to the art. The Coroner, in addressing the jury said they were called to inquire into the awfully sudden death of a well-known figure in Lancaster, Signor Pandolfini, who worked up to the last hour of his life, and apparently seemed to be in the enjoyment of perfect health. At all events, the people with whom he lived never suspected that he was ill. He had attended to a few duties, such as looking after the wants of some birds, on Thursday morning, and had then gone into the dark room of his studio, where he was found dead a few hours afterwards. He had telegraphed to the deceased gentleman’s relatives, and his son was present at that inquiry. He was glad to say that Dr. Dean had made a post mortem examination which had left no doubt that death was due entirely from natural causes.

Portable studio, Morecambe (1858)

Possibly Lancashire's first photographers, at the beginning of October 1853, both Partington and Pateson advertised their own independent studios in Preston. Within weeks, they had partnered. Using Preston as their base, they extended business to other towns including (in 1854) Lancaster (1).

In 1858, Robert Pateson acquired the use of a small wooden structure with a north-facing glass roof, which he used as a studio for taking portraits of families visiting the seaside at Morecambe (2.)

Alfred Ernest Clay Poole was originally from Manchester, and in 1869, after responding to an advertisement placed in the Manchester Courier by Elizabeth Horrobine (see above), at that time still based in Skipton, for a young man to assist her with printing and toning, it looks like he replied, and got the job! He then clearly followed the Horrobines to Morecambe after they moved there.

Photos by Mrs Sutcliffe.

Mrs (Elizabeth Eleanor) Sutcliffe) was the wife of Leeds-born photographer John Francis Sutcliffe (1836-91), who established studios at Carnforth, Burton-in-Kendal nearby Kirkby Lonsdale. John was a photographer by royal appointment to Edward, Prince of Wales (the future Edward VII). Following John’s death in 1891, Elizabeth took over the running of the business. She continued to run the studios cycling the 7 miles to Kirkby Lonsdale carrying all her equipment.

Pictured are sisters Elizabeth, Margaret and Mary Jane Wildman.

Walker, John

Lancaster, c. 1880-1920

AKA "Umbrella Legs". Walker was a prolific photographer who captured real life in and around Morecambe Bay. Based in Sunderland Point, he apparently cut a fine figure with his large moustache and fitted suit with tight trousers, which earned him the moniker 'Umbrella Legs'.

I'm curious to know if this might be the same William Woodhouse, as the famed Morecambe painter who lived just yards from this same address?
