CDV of Robert Jarvie by Nadar c. 1864
£20.00
Description: A lovely CDV by Félix Nadar, renowned as the world’s first celebrity photographer. The sitter is named as Robert Jarvie (whom I believe was born in 1816 in Glasgow, a Scottish businessman, known for his involvement in the Glasgow Building Company and for his extensive collection of art that became the foundation of Glasgow's first public art gallery).
Provenance: The image was taken in Nadar's studio at 35 Boulevard des Capucines, Paris, which he ran from 1860 until 1872. Jarvie died in Shanghai, China, in 1866, so this would tie in with the studio dates. Nadar's studio was a lavish affair, well known for attracting a clientele of the rich and famous, a fact he emphasised by having his name writ large in 10ft (3m) high red neon lights on the building. The studio later hosted the first Impressionist art exhibition. Nadar was also famed for taking the world’s first aerial photo.
Photographer: Nadar (Gaspard-Félix Tournachon).
