Date: Published in 1891.


The Scene: The photograph captures a group of men standing amidst massive stacks of 500-pound cotton bales in a New Orleans storage yard. During this era, New Orleans was the premier cotton port in the world, handling approximately one-third of all U.S. cotton production.


Photographer: John Fillis Jarvis (active 1850–1931).


Format: A stereograph, intended to be viewed through a stereoscope to create a 3D effect by merging the two slightly different perspectives.
