Description: A nice original b&w photographic print of Micklegate Bar, York, looks like a 1960s print to me. Slightly worn at the edges, some creases and tears, but complete. Micklegate Bar was the most important of York's four main medieval gateways and the focus for grand events. For centuries, the severed heads of rebels and traitors were displayed above the gate, the last head was removed in 1754!

Print is blank on the reverse.

Type: Silver Gelatin Print

Photographer: Unknown

Date: c. 1965

Provenance: Orphan Photo. Came in a job lot, with small paper attachment describing the history of Mickelgate Bar.
